PART 2 - Casting Your Precious Keepsake

Step 1

Again, get your station ready! You will need a mortar & pestle set, a brush, a piece of paper and Mémoire DIY equipment kit!

After allowing your breastmilk to dry for 48 hours, your are now ready to start the grinding process. Peel off the breastmilk which sticks on the parchment paper and pour into the mortar.

Remarks: It is important to ensure the breastmilk completely dry out without any trace amounts of moist as it will affect your breastmilk color during the casting.

Step 2

Grind your breastmilk in a circular and digging motion. Repeat the motion about 15-20 minutes until you get smaller pieces powder like form. Do take note that sometimes you may still have some mixture of bigger pieces powder after grinding but it is fine.

Step 3

Pour your breastmilk powder from your mortar into a piece of clean paper using a brush and set it aside to dry for another 4 hours. Any trace amount of moist which left trapped within the powder will be released in this process.

Step 4

After the final drying out process is done, you may now proceed to the casting part. Please wear a mask and glove (if desired) in this process as the hard glue involved naturally give off fumes and may cause irritation when smell or touch. Safety first!

You will need 5ml of hard glue mixture A and 2ml of hard glue mixture B. Take out a pen and mark 2 lines on the measurement cup, which is 5ml and 7ml respectively.

Draw 2 lines at 5ml and 7ml mark

Step 5

Hard glue mixture A has a denser texture. Thus, it is hard for the glue to press out via the cap. You may just open up the whole cap and pour slowly into the measuring cup until it reach 5ml line.

On the other hand, hard glue mixture B has a texture more like water. However, since the amount needed is in small quantity, only 2ml, the cap is designed to control the flow so that you do not overpour it. You may have difficulty pressing it out due to the small hole on the tip, thus you may use scissor to cut the tip off  (make a bigger hole) to allow it flows out easily.

Remarks: Hard glue mixture A and B needs to be as accurate as possible, otherwise the glue won't be harden properly.

Hard glue A is denser compare to B

Step 6

Gently mixed the hard glue A and B together by stirring it using the stick for 3 minutes. Don't forget to scrape the bottom and the sides when mixing it. While mixing, bubbles can and will occurs.

Remarks: Bubble formed in the mixture is completely normal. These bubbles will self-release itself to surface after mixing with the breastmilk powder in the next step.

Step 7

Pour all the breastmilk powder into the cup. Continue to stir the mixture with the stick for 3 minutes. Crush any larger powder between the stick and the sides of the cup. Let it sits for 2-3 minutes for the bubbles to self-release to surface and pop the bubbles using the stick by gently touching it.

Remarks: Do take note that it is normal to have "chucky" powder as not all powders is ultra-fine during the grinding process.

Step 8

Now the mixture is ready to be filled up into the heart shape mold. Before that, please check the surface of the mold to ensure no dust landed inside. Carefully fill the mold with the breastmilk mixture. Do take note that the mixture only filled half of the mold as it is measured precisely to fit into the display box later.

Then let it dry for at least 24 hours.

Remarks: Keep in mind that it is perfectly normal for small speckles of breastmilk to be visible. Each breastmilk is perfectly unique and beautiful.

Slowly fill up the mixture into the mold

Step 9

Your keepsake is now ready to be demolded! Remove your keepsake from the mold by slowly pushing it out. You will have a solid heart shape keepsake made from your preserved breastmilk!

Open the display box and place it in the middle of the box. Slowly close the box and you can now enjoy the tangible memory!
