PART 1 - Preserved Your Breastmilk

Step 1

Get your station ready! You will need a double boiler, or a double boiler setup, a spoon, a small square of parchment paper and a packet of breastmilk preservative powder.

Remarks: It is important to use a double boiler method instead of putting breastmilk directly on heating element as it may scorch or burn your breastmilk, which will destroy your sample.

Step 2

Make sure everything is clean and you are ready to go! Measure 3ml of your room temperature breastmilk using syringe and carefully set it aside.

Measurement 3ml of breastmilk

Step 3

Fill up the boiler underneath with water and turn the heat to medium high. Once the water is boiled, adjust the heat to medium and add all 3ml of the breastmilk into the top pan.

Remarks: Be careful as the breastmilk will get hot over time.

Add 3ml of breastmilk into top pan

Step 4

Wait until the breastmilk is heated up. Stir while it is heating up. The key point to look for is your breastmilk is bubbling lightly around the edges and will form a bit of "milk film".

Remarks: It is important to heat-up your breastmilk as it kills bacteria, stabilized the breastmilk and helps to absorb into the breastmilk preservative powder.

Step 5

Once your breastmilk is heated up, add all breastmilk preservative powder directly into your breastmilk. Start stirring it right away. At this point, you can adjust the heat to low.

Step 6

Stir the mixture to get even distribution between breastmilk and breastmilk preservative powder. Scrape the bottom and all around the "milk firm" to get it mixed together well.

Remarks: You should start seeing your breastmilk slowly form into thick paste.

Thick paste is lowly formed

Step 7

Please keep in mind that all breastmilk are different, Some are more watery, others contain more amazing fats. Some breastmilk will take a bit longer on the heating than others. Keep stirring it over the heat until it thickens and turn into thick paste texture. Once the breastmilk liquid form fully turned into thick paste, turn off you heat completely.

Remarks: Please do not overheat the paste otherwise it will turn into brown/black color.

Step 8

Spread your thick paste breastmilk into the center of the parchment paper. Spread it evenly and then fold the parchment paper into half. Apply pressure into the paste to make it as thin as possible when folding into half. Let it completely dry at room temperature for 48 hours.
